Cold Soak Optional System.

Cold Soak Optional System

For Alcohol or solid fuel tablets.

This concept has been around a while now, the Vargo Bot Pot being the only storage/cooking vessel capable of both functions. My idea is based on two food safe aluminium screwtop cans.
The primary can has a capacity of 750ml, the secondary holds 500ml.
Basically, this is ideal for people who dehydrate their own food for longer hiking/ backpacking trips, it will also work with commercial dried meals.

The kit consists of :

1.750ml screwtop aluminium can. 54.55g
1. 500ml screwtop aluminium can.42.29g
2.Wool felt cosys (one for each can.) 11.32 &8.03g
1. Titanium Pothugger windshield. 21.19g
2. Stainless steel Pot support pins. 7g
1.20mlAluminium Burner with push fit lid. 8.35g
1. Aluminium pivotal baseplate. 7.50g
1.Titanium solid fuel burner tray. 1.5g
1. Silicone lip protector/band 8.9g
1. Aluminium pot lifter. 37g

The two cans nest, making it a more compact package whilst transporting to your start point.

The 500 can holds all components except the pot lifter.

When in use the 750 can is used as the main rehydration unit. I usually decant the contents of my home dried food from the ziploc bag into the can a good 3- 4 hours before I intend to use.

Then add enough cold or warm water, NOT HOT, to just cover the contents.

Depending on which time of day you prefer to eat your main meal, I find 4 hours re-hydrates meat and vegetables, fish, pulses and rice without leaving any hard unconstituted lumps.

You may need to add more water when heating, or instant mashed potatoes for thickening.

Whilst these cans are food safe aluminium they are not as robust as the usual commercial titanium and hard anodised cookware you are used to, they will withstand boiling temperatures but will be prone to damage if not nursed properly.

I usually store the two cans separately in the middle of the pack between some softer clothing,in a sock or hat or the like. Storing in an outside pocket leaves them prone to damage.

By adding 10ml of water to the burner when re-fueling, this will reduce the heat output of the burner, allowing a more even heating of the contents and reduce fuel consumption. Stirring is always advised, especially with denser and sweeter foods.  The sugar content in some dried foods is one of the reasons to cause food to stick on pot bases.

Obviously when heating/ boiling water, use alcohol fuel only.

Method of Operation.

  • Remove cans from your sac.
  • Remove cans from cosys.
  • Remove contents from 500 can.
  • Set the windshield by matching black dots on opposing joint folds, then slide into each other vertically, inner spacer rivets near the top edge.
The spacer rivets automatically centralise the 750 can.

  • Locate the pot support pins into the small diameter holes in the windshield, these are at the optimum height for the burner or tray.
  • Upper support pin holes for solid fuel tray, lower holes for Mini alcohol burner.
  • The correct orientation for the windshield is, blanked screen (no holes)into the wind.
  • Unfold the pivotal baseplate and place on level surface.
  • Release the push on lid from burner.
  • Dispense 20ml of ALCOHOL based fuel into the white absorbent material.
  • Place burner on baseplate.

  • You can do this with the pot lifter if needed. Cover the food with the inverted lid, remove with the pot grab and then hold the can with the pot lifter to stir the contents.
  • Heat until the desired consistency you desire.
  • When ready, lift can from the windshield with the pot lifter and place in the cosy. Blow out the burner if still lit.

500ml Can.

  • Now the 500 can can be used to heat/boil water for your beverage.
  • First slip the silicone band, widest opening, over the threaded screw and ridge of the can.
  • Leave about 3mm of the band protruding above the rim, this will prevent lip burns
  • Refill the burner if needed, DO NOT FILL IF STILL ALIGHT.
  • Relight the burner.
  • Follow the same procedure as for the 750.
  • Placed centrally in the windshield over the burner, with the lid inverted, LID SEAL REMOVED.
  • When boiled/heated use the pot lifter to place it in the cosy.
  • When cleaning, use warm soapy water, don't use river sand or a scourer, these will scratch the inner surface af the cans.
  • Replace the cleaned lid seals ready for the next use.
  • Ready to heat. Inverted lid.
  • Lid seal removed. Silicone lip guard/band, ready to heat.
